Just Ask.com

What makes Ask.com a different search engine than the rest? I ‘ve heard great things about this search engine, but never really tried it out. I have seven search engines installed and never get around to using them all. Ask.com commercials say it's the algorithm...

Just What is an Algorithm?

An algorithm is a set of clearly defined rules and instructions for the solutions of a problem. It is not necessarily applied to computers, but is a step-by-step procedure for solving any type of problem. 7/9/07

Problem Solving Brain Exercise

We are trying to make some bright green paint by mixing 3 quarts of blue paint with 4 quarts of yellow paint. How much blue paint will we need to make 98 quarts of green paint? 7/9/07

Pear-Shaped or Tear-Shaped?

And what is the shape of a raindrop? High speed photos show that large raindrops have a spherical shape with a hole not quite through it, giving it a donut-like shape. Water surface tension pulls it into this shape. As larger drops fall, it becomes distorted. Air pressure flattens its bottom, the sides bulge and the center becomes thin. It then looks bow-tie shaped. Eventually, it will divide into two smaller spherical drops. 7/9/07

The Life of a CD-ROM

Manufacturers say that a CD will last for twenty years. The United States National Archives and Record Administration suggest that a lifespan of three to five years is more accurate. The main problem is the aluminum substratum on which the data is recorded is vulnerable to oxidation. 7/9/07

Why "Dog Days" of Summer

I have always thought is heat and humidity dogged you out, therefore dog days. I wanted to know if this is true, so I went to my research center to find out more. Not only did I get an answer, I found other useful information regarding weather.

This period of hot and humid weather that occurs in July and August received its name from the dog star Sirius. At this time of the year, Sirius, the brightest visible star, rises in the east the same time as the sun. Ancient Egyptians believed this star added to the suns heat to produce this hot weather.

The Sirius dog was blamed for withering droughts, sickness and discomfort back in the day. Dog Days start July 3 through August 11. 5/28/07

Does the Appendix Have a Purpose?

Experts can only theorize in its use. It may have had the same purpose it does in present day herbivores, where it harbors colonies of bacteria that help in the digestion of cellulose in plant material. Another theory suggests that tonsils and the appendix might manufacture the antibody producing white blood cells called B-lymphocytes. The third theory is that the appendix may attract body infections to localize the infection in one spot that is not critical to the body functions. The first appendix removal was in 1736. 5/28/07

News and Direction

This website will no longer be updated daily. I will update it three times a week. I'm thinking p.r.n. or Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday would be a good update schedule. This creates a problem for the "Today in..." section. It will become "Yesterday and Today in...".

This website will be updated daily in the distant future. This website is for the future and is expected to become fully matured in five years. Userplane, an AOL company, is still in the beta stage. I expect it to replace Yahoo, AOL, and MSN as one of the first universal IM and chat, not to mention revenue sharing with the website owner from advertisements. Why settle for My Space when it could be My Community.

Archives, a new section, has been added because some of the articles on the home page requires extensive research and what a waste if it is only posted one day.

Blog beta is being changed to a computer technology forum called Tech-Talk. That way all of my website visitors can share tips and information with each other. These are just a few of my plans for this ever evolving website. Any questions or if you might be interested in sponsoring Jimmy's Website, e-mail me at the link provided below. I recommend Mysite for anyone looking for a website. They have tools for the beginner as well as tools for the webmaster. Your personal website shouldn't be no different than a professional website. 5/21/07

Aluminum Cookware

Does aluminum cookware affect health? This question has not been resolved. Studies indicate that patients with Alzheimer's disease show an increased level of aluminum in their brains. It is still not known if aluminum plays a role in the disease. Aluminum can be absorbed from a variety of other sources; antacids, baking powder, flour whitener, salt additives, foil, and deodorant. Most of the aluminum taken into the body is excreted and the remainder is stored in the lungs, brain, liver and thyroid gland. There are some aluminum-induced diseases. The aluminum content in water from dialysis machines has caused dementia in patients. Aluminum hydroxide in antacids can cause tiredness, weakness, and loss of appetite; aluminum chloride in deodorants can cause dermatitis. 5/20/07

Sport Injuries

Football players suffer more injuries than all of the other sports collectively.. They have 12 times as many injuries as basketball players, who have the next highest injury rate. Knee problems are the most common type of injury. Two-thirds of basketball players' and one-third of football players' injuries are knee related. 5/20/07

The Antigen-Antibody Reaction

Defense Mechanism

The immune system operates with two main components, white blood cells and antibodies, both circulate in the blood. The antigen-antibody reaction forms the basis for immunity. When a antigen, bacterium and viruses, fungi, and etc, invade the body, a specific antibody is generated to attack the antigen. The antibody is produced by beta-lymphocytes (B-cells) in the spleen or lymph nodes. Antibodies either destroy it directly or labels it so a white blood cell (microphage) can engulf it. After a human has been exposed to an antigen, a later exposure to the same antigen will produce a faster immune system reaction. The necessary antibodies will be produced more rapidly and in larger amounts. Artificial immunizations uses this antigen-antibody reaction to protect the human body from certain diseases, by exposing the body to a safe dosage of antigen to produce effective antibodies as well as "readiness" for any future attacks of the harmful antigen.

Difference Between T Cells and B Lymphocytes

T cells are one of the two main classes of lymphocytes. They are responsible for dealing with viruses, some bacteria and fungi. As one variety of white blood cells, lymphocytes are part of the bodies immune system. T lymphocytes are about 80% of the lymphocytes circulating in the blood. They have been educated in the thymus to perform particular functions. Killer T cells multiply when they come in contact with antigens, abnormal body cells (cells that have been invaded by viruses, cells in transplanted tissue, or tumor cells). These killer cells attach themselves to the abnormal cells and release chemicals (lymphokines) to destroy them. Helper T cells assist killer cells in their activities.

When B lymphocytes, which are about 10% of the lymphocytes, contact the antigens on abnormal cells, the lymphocytes enlarge and divide to become plasma cells (the colorless fluid part of blood, lymph, or milk, in which corpuscles or fat globules are suspended). Then the plasma cells secrete vast numbers of immunoglobins or antibodies in the blood, which attach themselves to the surfaces of the abnormal cells, to begin a process that will lead to the destruction of the invaders. 5/17/07

The Term Bug

The slang term bug is used to describe problems and errors occurring in computer programs. The term may have originated during the 1940's at Harvard University, when a computer malfunctioned. A dead moth found in the system was thought to be the cause of the systems failure. This famous carcass. taped to a page of notes, is preserved with the trouble log notebook at the Virginia Navel Museum. 5/15/07

Endorphins

They are chemical substances produced by the brain. They act as opiates, in that they inferfere with the sensation of pain by binding to opiate receptor sites involved in pain perception. This action increases the threshold for pain. 5/14/07

Yahoo!

Microsoft is attempting to buy Yahoo. Will there be just one instant messenger? Yahoo and Windows Messenger already share contacts. I have MSN and Yahoo for home pages. Will there be only one home page? If MSN and Yahoo members combine, will it be a larger network than AOL? Would they be able to compete with AOL? Will AIM still be number the number one instant messenger? Only time will tell. 5/14/07
